2007 Chateau Rollat "Sophie" Red Wine
An easy drinking fabulously sexy wine. Edouard & Sophie came to NY from France (near Dijon) in 1903, and he became the somellier at Cafe Martin in Madison Square in NYC. He stayed there for 27 years, until he moved to Vendome in NYC and was also a sommellier at Caviar. Eduoard & Sophie had two children, Ida & Henry. Eduoard was a 6'3" towering man, while his wife was dainty & soft spoken. Chateau Rollat has just released the first vintage of Sophie, an immediately approachable, yet sophisticated, wine with soft supple tannins. The Eduoard is a classic full-bodied cabernet; earth on the nose, cassis on the palate, mint, and a host of other flavors in this amazingly complex wine with infinite layers. Oh, by the way, they're award-winning wines from Walla Walla, made by Christian LeSommer, former wine master & General manager for Chateau LaTour (think 100 points wine spectator ratings). Winemaker, Christian LeSommer is best known for his work as general manager and wine master at Chateau Latour during the 1980s and 1990s. Before joining Chateau Latour, he managed Vignobles Ducourt and Vignobles Henri Maire. Early in his wine making career, LeSommer was also assistant manager at the famed Sauternes maker, Chateau d’Yquem.
After leaving Latour, LeSommer began working as a consulting manager for Domaines des Barons de Rothschild (of Chateau Lafite fame.) He continues to manage their Los Vascos (Chile), Quinta do Carmo (Portugal), Caro (Argentina), and Rocca de Frassinello (Italy) programs.
